OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Agent: Create PowerPoints, Spreadsheets & Automate Tasks with AI

New Delhi: OpenAI has just introduced a powerful new tool in the AI space the ChatGPT Agent, a smart assistant designed to automate everyday digital tasks like online shopping, creating Excel spreadsheets, and building PowerPoint presentations.

The San Francisco-based AI giant confirmed that this new agent runs on an advanced AI model tailored specifically for these kinds of jobs. Unlike the usual chatbot experience, the ChatGPT Agent behaves like a real user it can scroll through websites, click links, type, and complete actions just like a human.

Starting this Thursday, the ChatGPT Agent will be accessible to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers. OpenAI plans to roll it out to Enterprise and Education users later this summer.

What’s New with ChatGPT Agent?

Although OpenAI previously released a tool called “Operator”, the ChatGPT Agent takes things a step further. It combines the smart browsing features of Operator with “deep research” capabilities, meaning it can collect and synthesize large amounts of data from the internet and deliver more insightful results.

This makes it useful for tasks like:

  • Booking a table at your favorite restaurant

  • Creating detailed market research reports

  • Performing basic financial analysis

  • Preparing client meeting briefs using real-time news updates

  • Comparing competitors and generating slide decks

Neel Ajjarapu, a product manager at OpenAI, explained it like this: “The model is great at low-level financial analysis the kind of stuff you’d normally stay up all night doing after your boss drops a last-minute task.”

AI Agents Are the New Productivity Hack

OpenAI isn’t alone in the race to build smarter AI agents. Big names like Salesforce and Workday have also launched their own versions, capable of summarizing reports and even reaching out to potential leads or job candidates.

These agents act like digital assistants, capable of completing work-related tasks without constant human input. While the technology is still maturing, the potential is massive especially when integrated with apps and business software.

Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, called the ChatGPT Agent an “important step forward” in making ChatGPT not just a Q&A tool, but a true action-based assistant for real-world use.

Office Work in Minutes, Not Hours

One of the most exciting features? The ChatGPT Agent can whip up drafts of Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations which you can then tweak using Microsoft Office or similar tools. That’s a huge time-saver, cutting down tasks that used to take hours (or days) into just 30 minutes.

But this feature also brings OpenAI into direct competition with Microsoft the same company that’s both an investor and a close partner. Microsoft already offers its own AI tools inside Office apps like Excel and PowerPoint.

Despite this overlap, OpenAI insists there’s no rivalry. “This is just how people communicate. They create spreadsheets, they create PowerPoints,” said Kevin Weil.

However, there’s a notable limitation: the ChatGPT Agent doesn’t yet support Google Slides or Google Sheets tools used widely in schools and businesses across India and beyond.

Interestingly, OpenAI also has a content-licensing deal with News Corp, the owner of Wall Street Journal, suggesting it’s taking steps to ensure it has access to high-quality, reliable content for its models.
